Description

Nuisance algae or green water normally appears from early spring right through to late autumn. It flourishes on excess nutrients in the water, warm weather, and strong sunlight, hence why it is rare in the winter.

Barley straw is weak in nutrients. As it breaks down it uses natural, harmless bacteria found in the pond to generate peroxide which kills the algae (this is dependent on water temperatures and specific pond conditions).
